Hubbardston, Vermont
Rutland county. Elizabeth Hickok, the daughter of Elizabeth and Uriah Hickok, was the first white child born in this town. This event occurred in 1774. The face of the town is uneven, and in some parts mountainous. It is watered by several ponds, the largest of which, lying partly in Sudbury, is Gregory's pond, the outlet of which is called Hubbardston river. This river empties into Lake Champlain at West Haven and is an excellent mill stream. The village at the northwesterly part of the town is pleasant and flourishing: it contains mills for the manufacture of various articles.

Hubbardston lies 50 miles S.W. from Montpelier, and 10 N.W. from Rutland. Population, 1830, 865.

Rutland Co. The surface of the township is uneven, and somewhat mountainous. The most noted summit is Mount Zion, so named by Ethan Allen. There are several natural ponds, the largest of which is Gregory's Pond, which is about three miles long and one broad, and lies partly in Sudbury. At its outlet are excellent mill privileges, surrounded by a pleasant little village.

Berbe's Pond, situated a mile northwest of the centre of the town, is one and a half miles long and a mile wide, and discharges south into Lake Bombazine. Round Pond, Marsh Pond, Keeler's Pond, Black's Pond, and Howland's Pond, are smaller. The latter discharges into Otter Creek.

The town is well timbered with hard wood and hemlock. Pine was formerly plenty, but is now become scarce. The soil is various. The eastern part is hard pan, and is very good for grass and grain.
