1839 - Stratton
Stratton, Vermont
Windham county. A mountainous township in the west part of the county, 18 miles N.E. from Bennington and 22 N.W. from Brattleborough. Branches of Deerfield and Winhall rivers rise here from two ponds. The soil is cold and generally unprofitable. Population, 1830, 312.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory. 1849 - Stratton
Windham Co. This is a mountainous town in the west part of the county. Branches of Deerfield and Winhall Rivers rise here from two ponds. The soil is cold and generally unprofitable.

Stratton Avas settled principally byemigrants from Massachusetts. Among the early settlers were families by the name of Morsman and Patch. A meeeting-house Avas built here about the year 1809.

Boundaries. North by Winhall, east by Jamaica and Wardsborough, south by Somerset, and west by Sunderland.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 169 bushels ; Indian corn, 141 bushels ; potatoes, 942 bushels: hay, 837 tons; maple sugar, 2,672 pounds 5 wool, 1,637 pounds.

Distances. Eighteen miles northeast from Bennington, and twenty-two north-west from Brattleborough.

1900 - Lightning’s Work in Stratton.
The barns of H. H. Forrester, of Stratton, were struck by lightning recently and entirely consumed, together with 10 tons of hay, mowing machine, farm cart and various other farming tools. Mr. Forrester had just put his team but these were saved, also a sheep and two lambs. The fire spread rapidly and it was less than an hour after the bolt struck before the roof fell in. Mr. Forrester’s house was struck at the same time, the bolt making two holes in the soap stone cistern and cutting the water pipe, but doing no further injury. The buildings were insured.
