Middlesex, Vermont, USA - Middlesex, Vermont, USA - Old Bridge near Middlesex, Vt.

Middlesex is a town in Washington County, Vermont.

The town of Middlesex was granted by royal charter on June 8, 1763, by New Hampshire colonial governor Benning Wentworth. The town takes its boundaries from Waterbury, incorporated the previous day, and Worcester, which received its grant the same day as Middlesex. The source of the town's name is uncertain but it is supposed Wentworth, or a staff member, chose the name for its location between Waterbury and Worcester. Another possibility would be that Wentworth chose Middlesex to seek favor from English nobleman Charles Sackville who held the title Lord Middlesex until 1765, when he became Duke of Dorset.

The town remained largely undeveloped through the period of the Vermont Republic and early Vermont statehood, with settlements in the village and Putnamville. The Putnam family were among the first settlers of the town.

Washington county. Onion river and other streams give this town a good water power. It has numerous manufacturing concerns, and a very pleasant village. The soil along the streams is good, and that of the uplands, generally, is adapted for grazing. It lies 30 miles E.S.E. from Burlington, and is bounded by Montpelier on the S.E. First settled in 1781. Population, 1830, 1,156.

There is a curious chasm in Middlesex, on Onion river, near Moretown. The river has worn a passage through rocks 30 feet in depth, 60 feet in width, and about 80 rods in length. The walls on each side are very smooth, over which a bridge is thrown. This place is worthy of a visit.

Washington Co. The south part if Middlesex is watered by Winooski River, which furnishes here one of the best stands for mills in the county. The north branch of this river runs across the north-east corner of the town.

Middlesex is uneven, but the only mountain of consequence lies along the line between the town and Waterbury, and is called the Hogback. The timber is such as is common to the mountain to^vnS; and the soil generally good. There are some fine intervales along the river, but the flats are not extensive.

The channel worn through the rocks by Winooski River, between this township and Moretown, is a considerable curiosity. It is about thirty feet in depth, sixty in width, and eighty rods in length, the rocks appearing like a wall upon each side. Over this chasm a bridge is thrown, which is perfectly secure from floods. But little is yet known of the mineralogy. Some fine specimens of rock crystal have been picked up.

On the bank of the Winooski River at the falls,... Read MORE...
