Halifax, Vermont
Windham county. This township is rather elevated, but of good soil, finely adapted for grazing. It is a place of considerable trade and of manufactures on its numerous streams. Its principal streams are Green river and a branch of the Deerfield. There are some handsome falls of water in Halifax, and a curious cave called Dun's Den. The productions of the town are butter, cheese, pork, sheep and other cattle. The cause of education flourishes here, and the people are generally independent cultivators of the soil. Halifax lies 125 miles S. from Montpelier, and 15 S. from Newfane. First settled, 1761.—Population, 1830, 1,562.

WINDHAM Co. This township is watered by North and Green River. The former runs through the western and southern part, and the latter through the north-eastern. They are both large and commodious mill streams, and the mill privileges are numerous. In the branch of North River, on the farm of Henry Niles, is a succession of cascades extending about 100 rods. The falls are from fifteen to twenty feet each, and are overlooked by the projecting rocks on the right in ascending the stream. The place is visited by the curious, and the scene, which presents itself, is rugged, wild, and romantic.

The surface of the township is uneven, even, but there are no mountains worthy of notice.

On the margin of North River is a Cavern, called Woodard's Cave or Dun's Den. It is twenty-five feet in length, five in width, and the same in height. The sides and top are of solid rock.
