1839 - Duxbury
Duxbury, Vermont
Washington county. This town lies on the S. side of Onion river, and is watered by several of its branches. The land along Onion river is good, but the greater part of the township is mountainous and unfit for cultivation. Duxbury lies 12 miles W. from Montpelier. First settled 1786. Population, 1830, 651.

1849 - Duxbury
Washington Co. The south and western parts of this township are mountainous, and incapable of settlement. Nearly all the inhabitants are confined to the margin of Winooski River, and the north-eastern parts of the township. This township is watered by Winooski River, which forms the northern boundary, by Duxbury branch, on which is a considerable settlement, and several small branches of Mad River. The natural bridge over Winooski River is between this town and Waterbury, and near it are some curious caverns.

Boundaries. North by Waterbury and a part of Bolton, from which it is separated by Winooski River, east by Moretown, south by Fayston, and west by Huntington and a part of Bolton.

First Settlers. The settlement of this township was commenced about the year 1786.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 1,293 bushels; Indian corn, 2,714 bushels; potatoes, 27,910 bushels; hay, 2,289 tons ; maple sugar, 26,374 pounds ; wool, 4,837 pounds.

1880 - Hanging
In 1880, Emeline Meaker of Duxbury was hanged for poisoning her niece, Alice. The trial received much coverage throughout the country. She was the first woman hanged in Vermont.
