About West Rutland
West Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont. It's known for its marble quarries and scenic landscapes.
The town of Rutland was originally granted in 1761 as one of the New Hampshire Grants and named after Rutland, Massachusetts, the home of the first grantee, John Murrey. It was one of the most successful of those grants because of excellent farmland and gentle topography.
In 1863, there was rioting in West Rutland after the state instituted a draft.
During a strike in 1868, owners evicted Irish-Catholic workers from company-owned homes, then imported dozens of French-Canadian Catholic "strikebreakers" to replace them.
West Rutland petitioned the Vermont legislature to separate from East Rutland. On November 19, 1886, West Rutland was incorporated as its own town... wikipedia

1892 - West Rutland Methodist Church Fire
The Methodist church at West Rutland, Vt., was burned yesterday afternoon. The fire probably caught from the furnace. The furniture, pews, and carpets were saved. The church was built in 1885 and cost $6,000. It was considered one of the prettiest churches in the Troy Methodist Conference. Insurance, $3,000.
1893 - SEVEN KILLED AND MANY INJURED. A DISASTROUS AND FATAL QUARRY ACCIDENT AT WEST RUTLAND.
RUTLAND, Vt., Feb. 11. - One of the worst disasters in the history of marble quarrying occurred at West Rutland a little after 1 o'clock this afternoon in a quarry operated by the Vermont Marble Company, with which Senator Proctor is connected. A great mass of stone fell into the quarry and seven men were instantly killed and a number of others injured. The victims were a gang at work at channeling and taking away refuse, and were all middleaged men.
