Addison county. This is a mountainous township, the surface and soil of which are too broken and cold for much cultivation. Middlebury river and the turnpike from Royalton to Vergennes pass through it. Ripton lies 26 miles S.W. from Montpelier and 9 E. from Middlebury. Population, 1830, 278.

This town was granted in 1781, and chartered to Abel Thompson and associates.
Boundaries. North by Avery's Gore and Bristol, east by Granville, south by Goshen, and west by Middlebury.
Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 170 bushels; Indian corn, 120 bushels; potatoes, 9,360 bushels ; hay, 690 tons ; maple sugar, 4,200 pounds ; wool, 1,796 pounds.
Distances. Twenty-six miles southwest from Montpelier, and nine east from Middlebury.
This town is easily approached from the great Southern Railroad.
