Pittsfield is a town in central Vermont, surrounded by the Green Mountains. It's a popular spot for outdoor recreation, including skiing at nearby resorts like Killington and Pico.


Granted on November 8, 1780, the town was chartered on July 29, 1781, to Samuel Wilcox and 129 others. Pittsfield was named after Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which itself had been named in honor of William Pitt.

Rutland county. Tweed river is formed in this town, by two branches, which afford mill seats: it empties into White river, which passes through the N.E. corner. The surface of the town is mountainous, and the soil hard. Pittsfield was first settled in 1786. Population, 1830, 505. It lies 35 miles S.S.W. from Montpelier and 17 N.E. from Rutland.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory. 1849 - Pittsfield
RUTLAND Co. Tweed River is formed in this town by two branches, which afford mill sites : it empties into White River, which passes through ; the north-east corner. The surface of the town is mountainous, and the soil hard.

Boundaries. Easterly by Rochester, south-easterly by Stockbridge, and westerly by Chittenden and Goshen.

First Settlers. The settlement was commenced in 1786, by Thomas Hodgkins, Stephen Holt, George Martin, Daniel and Jacob Bowe, and a Mr. Woodard.

First Minister, A Congregational Church was organized in 1793: Rev. Justus Parsons was settled over it from 1814 to 1831.

Productions of the Soil Wheat, 584 bushels; Indian corn, 1,531 bushels; potatoes, 16,373 bushels 5 hay, 1,632 tons ; wool, 5,220 pounds.

Distances. Thirty-five miles southwest from Montpeiler. and seventeen north-east from Rutland.
