Peru is a small town in Bennington County, nestled in the Green Mountains. It's a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking trails and access to the Long Trail.


The town was chartered with the name Bromley in 1761 by Benning Wentworth, governor of the Province of New Hampshire...

The town of Bromley was organized at a town meeting in March 1802. As of the autumn of 1802 there were 14 families living in the town. In late 1803 or early 1804 the name of the town was changed to Peru. The new name was adopted to attract more people to the town by associating it with the South American province of Peru, which was considered to be a place of great wealth, apparently due to the rich silver mining industry there...

Bennington county. This is a Green Mountain township, high and broken. It contains two large fish ponds from which issue beautiful mountain streams. First settled, 1773. Population, 1830, 455. It lies 30 miles N.N.E. from Bennington and 30 S.W. from Windsor.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory. Bennington Co. This is a Green Mountain township, high and broken. It contains two large fish ponds, from which issue beautiful mountain streams. Here is fine fishing and delightful scenery.

Boundaries. North by Mount Tabor, east by Land grove, south by Winhall, and west by Dorset.

First Settler. The settlement of this town was commenced about the year 1773, by Wm. Barlow, from Woodstock, Ct.

First Minister. The Rev. Oliver Plympton was ordained over the Congregational Church in 1813, and died the next year.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 534 bushels : Indian corn, 320 bushels ; potatoes, 23,100 bushels ; hay, 1,290 tons ; maple sugar, 7,640 pounds; wool, 1,610 pounds.

Distances. Thirty- miles north northeast from Bennington, and thirty southwest from Windsor.
