Northfield was chartered in 1781, and incorporated in 1855. The community was named after Northfield, Massachusetts.

Northfield is a town in Washington County, home to Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the United States. The town has a rich history and is a hub for educational and cultural events.

Northfield Falls is a small village in the town of Northfield, and was originally named Gouldsville, after Joseph Gould who built a large woolen mill in the Falls.

1839 - Northfield
Northfield, Vermont
Washington county. This town lies 10 miles S.S.W. from Montpelier and 35 E. from Burlington. Population in 1830, 1,412. First settled, 1785. The principal stream in this town is Dog river, which runs through it in a northerly direction, and affords a great number of valuable mill privileges. The surface is uneven, but the soil is generally good and easily cultivated. In the centre of the town is a neat, pleasant and flourishing village, containing a number of saw mills and other mechanical operations by water.

Washington Co. The principal stream in this town is Dog River, which runs through it in a northerly direction, and affords a great number of valuable mill privileges. The timber is hemlock, spruce, maple, beech and birch, intermingled with fir, pine, ash, butternut. &c. The soil is generally good, and in many places, is easily cultivated. A range of argillaceous slate passes through the township from south to north. The surface is uneven, and a range of high lands passes from north to south through the town, both on the eastern and western side of the river. There are four villages in this town, in which are considerable manufacturing operations. The railroad between Boston and Burlington which passes here will greatly enhance the value of real estate in this and the neighboring towns. The Northfield Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1848.

1887 - COLLISION IN VERMONT
MONTPELIER, Vt., Feb. 18. - The passenger train due at Montpelier shortly after 10 P. M. ran into a freight train near the gravel pit about three miles this side of Northfield. Baggagemaster C. H. Moody, of St. Albans, is slightly injured. The engine and two or three freight cars were wrecked and several hogs in one car were killed. The engineer and fireman on both trains jumped. The accident was caused by the engineer of the freight train supposing the mail had passed the junction when instead it was a special train.
