Northfield, Vermont
Washington county. This town lies 10 miles S.S.W. from Montpelier and 35 E. from Burlington. Population in 1830, 1,412. First settled, 1785. The principal stream in this town is Dog river, which runs through it in a northerly direction, and affords a great number of valuable mill privileges. The surface is uneven, but the soil is generally good and easily cultivated. In the centre of the town is a neat, pleasant and flourishing village, containing a number of saw mills and other mechanical operations by water.

The timber is hemlock, spruce, maple, beech and birch, intermingled with fir, pine, ash, butternut. &c. The soil is generally good, and in many places, is easily cultivated. A range of argillaceous slate passes through the township from south to north. The surface is uneven, and a range of high lands passes from north to south through the town, both on the eastern and western side of the river. There are four villages in this town, in which are considerable manufacturing operations. The railroad between Boston and Burlington which passes here will greatly enhance the value of real estate in this and the neighboring towns. The Northfield Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1848.
