The town of Killington was chartered on July 7, 1761, by a New Hampshire grant. In 1800, it was renamed Sherburne after landholder Colonel Benjamin Sherburne. The town voted to revert to its original name of Killington on March 2, 1999; which was approved by the Vermont General Assembly and became effective July 1, 1999. wikipedia

1839 - Sherburne
Sherburne, Vermont
Rutland county. Killington Peak, 3,924 feet in height, several ponds, and Thundering brook, with a handsome fall, lie in this town, and along its banks is some good land; but the lands are generally too elevated even for pasturage. Sherburne was first settled in 1785. It lies 22 miles N.W. from Windsor and 10 E. from Rutland. Population, 1830, 452.

1849 - Sherburne
Rutland Co. Killington Peak, 3,924 feet in height, several ponds, and Thundering Brook, with a handsome fall, lie in this town. Queechy River rises in this town, and along its banks is some good land ; but the lands are generally too elevated, even for pasturage.

Boundaries. North by Stockbridge, east by Bridgewater, south and west by Mendon.

First Settlers. The settlement was commenced here in 1785, by Isaiah Washburn. The town was organized in 1794.

First Minister. A Congregational Church was formed here in 1823.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 686 bushels ; Indian corn, 762 bushels ; potatoes, 12,245 bushels; hay, 1,295 tons ; maple sugar, 6,970 pounds ; wool, 4,257 pounds.

Distances. Ten miles north-east from Rutland.

This town is but a few miles from the Southern Railroad depot at Rutland.

Sherburne, a post - hamlet in Sherburne township, Rutland co., Vt., 12 miles E.N.E. of Rutland. It has a church, and some manufactures of lumber. Pop. of the township, 462. Killington Peak, 4221 feet high, is in the S.W. part of Sherburne.
