Coventry, Vermont
Orleans county. This is a good township of land, and is watered by Barton's and Black rivers, two good mill streams, running north into Memphremagog lake. First settled 1800. Population, 1830, 728. The south part of the lake lies in Coventry, and gives it some trade to Canada. Here are about 2,500 sheep. Coventry lies 47 miles N. by E. from Montpelier, and has Irasburgh on the south.

Orleans Co. Barton and Black Rivers run northerly through this town into Memphremagog Lake. These streams are from four to- eight rods wide, and very deep near their mouths. There are good mill privileges in this town on Black River, and likewise on some of the smaller streams. The other waters are South Bay of Lake Memphremagog, and two small ponds. The soil is generally good. Near the lake it is, in some places, clayey, and on Black River it is somewhat sandy, but the township, generally, consists of a deep, rich loam. Its timber is mostly maple and beech, with some elm, basswood, birch, hemlock, spruce, fir, cedar, &c. The western part of the town is somewhat broken, but not mountainous.

The village of Coventry was commenced in the fall of 1821, by Calvin and Daniel W. Harmon, when all that part of the town was a dense forest. It is situated at the falls in Black River in the south-west part of the town, and is in a flourishing state. This town received the name of Orleans in...
