1824 - Barnet
BARNET, a post town in Caledonia county, lying on Connecticut river, opposite to Lyman, N.H. in lat 44° 19′, and long 4° 51′ east, and containing about 40 square miles. It is bounded north by Waterford, east by Connecticut river, south by Ryegate, and west by Peacham and Danville, and is 35 miles east of Montpelier, and 65 miles north from Windsor, as the roads are travelled. The charter of Barnet is dated Sept. 15, 1763. The principal proprietors were Enos, Samuel and Willard Stevens, sons of Capt. Phineas Stevens, who so nobly defended the fort at Charleston, N.H., April 4, 1747, against a large party of French and Indians, under the command of M. Debeline. March 4, 1770, the first settlement was commenced in this town by Jacob, Eliza and Daniel Hall and Jonathan Fowler. Sarah, daughter of Elizah Hall, was the first child, and Barnet, son of Jonathan Fowler, the first male child born in town. The latter was presented by Enos Stevens, Esq. with 100 acres of land. The town was... Read MORE...

This town has a great water power on Passumpsic and Stevens' rivers. On the latter, are falls of 100 feet, in the distance of 10 rods. This water power is improved by three flannel and other manufactories. There are a number of pleasant and fertile islands in the river between this place and Lyman, and some beautiful ponds in Barnet, which afford fish of various kinds. This is quite a romantic place, and lies at the head of navigation on the Connecticut river. In 1835, the product of the farms, carried to market, amounted to $26,381. One farmer sold 3,000 lbs. of butter and 3,000 lbs. of pork.... Read MORE...

1881 - Sale of the Queen of Barnet
Information from Mr. J. S. Kenerson, of Barnet, Vt., is to the effect that he has just disposed of the famous cow "Jersey Queen of Barnet" to Mr. A. B. Darling of the 5th Avenue Hotel, New York, for $2,000. Mr. Darling is the owner of the cow "Eurotas" with the great butter record.

1909 - VILLAGE UNDER WATER. Barnet Residents Going About in Boats - Connecticut River at Record High Point.
St. Johnsbury, April 16 - The high water is cauding considerable damage and inconvenience in this vicinity. The trains from the north are obliged to come around by Scott's Junction, N. H., and the train from the south which is due to arrive here at 11:45 o'clock was cancelled this morning. The afternoon trains will probably go by way of Wells River. Railroading in the vicinity of Wells River is decidedly uncertain, the track between that place and Bradford being entirely under water.

A washout on the Boston & Maine, one and one half miles below this place yesterday caused the track to settle so that freight No. 37 which was due here about midnight, was derailed, twenty-six cars being thrown off and it took six hours to get the cars back on to the track. No one was hurt in the accident.

The Connecticut river is at the highest point ever known. Barnet village, ten miles from St. Johnsbury, is partly under water, there being 6 to 7 feet in the lower part of the village where the... Read MORE...
