1824 - Albany
ALBANY, a township, 6 miles square, in the central parts of Orleans county, 34 miles north from Montpelier, in lat. 44° 43'. It is bounded northerly by Irasburgh, easterly by Glover, southerly by Craftsbury and westerly by Kellyvale, and a small part of Eden. This township is watered by Black river, which is formed in Craftsbury, and passes through Albany in a northeasterly direction and by a number of its branches. There are likewise several considerable ponds, the largest of which is great Hosmer's pond, lying partly in this town and partly in Craftsbury. Much of this town is suitable for tillage and very easy to cultivate. The market road from Boston to Montreal through Peacham, Craftsbury, &c. passes through the south-west corner of the town, and there is a pretty good road, nearly through the centre of the town, from Craftsbury to Irasburgh. Orleans county. This town was granted in the year 1781, by the name of Lutterloh; in 1815 it was changed to its present name. It is watered by a number of ponds, and by Black river and its branches. Albany lies 34 miles N. from Montpelier and 9 S. of Irasburgh. Population, 1830, 683.

Orleans Co. This town was granted in the year 1781, by the name of Lutterloh; in 1815 it was changed to its present name. The town is not mountainous, but in some parts the surface is uneven.

Albany is watered by Black River, which is formed in Craftsbury, and passes through it in a north-easterly direction, and by several of its branches. There are likewise several considerable ponds, the most important of which. Great Hosmer's Pond, is partly in Craftsbury. The soil is generally sandy or gravelly. Along the river is some fine intervale.

Boundaries. North-easterly by Irasburgh, south-east by Glover, south-west by Craftsbury, and north-west by Lowell and Eden.

First Settlers. The town was organized March 27, 1806, and Benjamin Neal was the town clerk.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 2,61 8 bushels; Indian corn, 1,597 bushels; potatoes, 43,389 bushels; hay, 2,685 tons ; maple sugar, 42,298 pounds ; wool, 6,121 pounds.
