Winchester, New Hampshire
Cheshire county. This pleasant town is bounded N. by Swanzey and Chesterfield, E. by Richmond, W. by Hinsdale, and S. by Massachusetts line. It lies 13 miles S.W. from Keene, 65 S.W. from Concord, 80 N. from Hartford, Ct., and 12 E. from Brattleboro, Vt. Population, 1837, 2,500. The face of this town is diversified with hills and valleys. The soil is of an excellent quality, furnishing in abundance all the agricultural products natural to this section of the country. Ashuelot river passes through the centre of this town, affording a number of mill privileges, and is bordered on each bank by extensive intervales, of a fertility rarely excelled.

There are other small streams running in various directions through the town, affording facilities for water power.

1854 - Winchester
Cheshire co., New Hampshire, on the Ashuelot river and railroad, about 55 miles S. W. from Concord, contains 3 or 4 churches, 1 bank, a number of mills and factories, chiefly woollen, and 2 newspaper offices. Population of the township, in 1840, 2005 ; in 1850, 3296.

1855 - Flood
The Transcript of Saturday has the following:

"The flood at Winchester has receded so that the place is comparatively dry again this morning. Fire engines were employed last evening in pumping out the cellars, many of which were completely filled. The water still pours with great fury through the culvert at 'Bacon's,' where the Lowell Railroad bridge fell in yesterday, but a large gang of hands working through the night succeeded in making one track passage for trains this morning and the other will be prepared to-day.

While assisting in the passage of a train over this bridge yesterday, Mr. Charles Converse, of the Woburn Express, lost a pocket book containing $175 and valuable papers. It was seen afloat, but could not be rescued, and will probably with considerable other property, find its way through the Mystic into the sea. Winchester, a post-village in Winchester township, Cheshire co., N.H., on the Ashuelot River and the Ashuelot Railroad, 13 miles S.S.W. of Keene. It has 3 churches, a national bank, a high school, and a tannery. The township contains a village named Ashuelot, with a woollem-factory. Pop. of the township in 1890, 2584.
