These lands were granted to François Dumontier dit Brillant, secretary to the governor of New France Philippe Rigaud de Vaudreuil, in 1708,
but when the seigneur of Dumontier died in the sinking of the ship Saint-Jérôme in 1714, the seigneury passed to his widow, Marie-Anne Rivardet to her 4 children. Then it changed hands a dozen times during the following century and it was in 1833 that the parish of Saint-Léon-le-Grand was erected by detachment from that of Saint-Antoine-de-la-Rivière-du-Loup.

The beginnings of this inhabited space date back to the end of the 18th century with the foundation in 1797 of a mission which became the parish of Saint-Léon-le-Grand,
erected canonically in 1833 and civilly in 1849, following the partial dismemberment of Saint -Antoine-de-la-Rivière-du-Loup. At first, the place was identified as Saint-Léon-de-Dumontier, because this area was partly included in the fiefs of Dumontier, Grosbois and Grandpré. Moreover, the first municipality officially created in 1845 bore the name Dumontier.
