Shawinigan, Québec, Canada - Shawinigan, Québec, Canada - Shawinigan Falls, Que., Place du Marche (The Market)

The city of Shawinigan is spread over a vast territory of approximately 782 square kilometers in the administrative region of Maurici. Shawinigan is about 135 kilometers from Montreal. The city is not part of any regional county municipality.

The territory of Shawinigan had been frequented by Amerindians for many centuries. The first Europeans, Jesuit missionaries who came to evangelize the Indians, traveled up the Saint-Maurice River around the middle of the 17th century. But the settlement of the land did not really begin until two hundred years later, after the constitution of the township of Shawinigan in 1848 and the arrival of the first settlers as part of the forestry exploration of the Mauricie.
