The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established in 1680 serving initially as a port for shipping agricultural products and later as the county's commercial and governmental center.

1854 - Middlesex county
Middlesex, a county in the E. part of Virginia, bordering on Chesapeake bay, at the mouth of Rappahannock river. The latter forms the entire boundary on the N. E., and Piankatank river on the S. W. The length is 39 miles ; mean breadth, about 5 miles ; area, about 150 square miles. The soil is sandy, and a portion of the land is fertile. Indian corn is the staple product. In 1850, there were raised 134,258 bushels of corn, and 30,762 of wheat. There were 8 grist mills and 5 saw mills. It contained 9 churches, 152 pupils attending public schools, and 74 attending other schools. Formed in 1676. Capital, Urbana. Population, 4394, of whom 2052 were free, and 2342, slaves.

1895 - Middlesex county
Middlesex, an eastern county of Virginia, borders on Chesapeake Bay. Area, about 135 square miles. It is bounded on the N.E. by the Rappahannock River, and the Plankatank River forms its W. and S.W. boundaries, The surface is nearly level. The soil is sandy, and produces a little Indian corn, wheat, &c. Capital, Saluda. Pop. in 1870, 4981; in 1880, 6252; in 1890, 7458.
