Surry, a county in the S. E. part of Virginia, has an area of 340 square miles. James river forms the boundary on the N. E., and Blackwater river on the S. W. The surface is moderately uneven; the soil is generally sandy. Indian corn is the staple product. In 1850 there were raised 204,975 bushels of corn. There were 5 saw mills, and 11 churches. Formed in 1652, and named from Surry, a county in England. Capital, Surry Court House. Pop., 5679, of whom 8200 were free, and 2479, slaves.
