During the reign of Mary 1553-1558 Protestants were persecuted in England. At that time 5 men from Ashford were executed at Canterbury while 2 men from Tenterden were executed Ashford in 1557.

Ash'ford, a town of England, co. of Kent, 12 1/ 2 miles S.W. of Canterbury, and 53 miles by rail from London. Pop. 8458. The principal street, nearly half a mile in length, is paved and lighted. The church, once collegiate, is large, and has some superb monuments.
