The town was founded when settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts established residence on lands obtained from local Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1640.

By July 7, 1640, they had determined the town boundaries.

Southampton is named after the port city of Southampton in Hampshire, England.

1640 - Southampton founded.
The first settlers included eight men, one woman, and a boy who came ashore at Conscience Point. These men were Thomas Halsey, Edward Howell, Edmond Farrington, Edmund Needham, Abraham Pierson the Elder, Thomas Sayre, Josiah Stanborough, George Welbe, Henry Walton and Job Sayre.
1854 - South Hampton
South Hampton, a post town-ship of Suffolk co., New York, immediately S. E. from River- head. It is washed by the Atlantic on the S., and Great Peconio bay on the N. Pop., 6501.

South Hampton, a post-village in the above township, near the 8. side of Long Island, about 100 miles E. from New York. It contains an academy, and 1 or 2 churches. South Hanover, a township of Dauphin co., Pennsylvania, 12 miles E. from Harris-
