By 1634, the Colony consisted of eight shires or counties with a total population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants. One of these was Warrosquyoake Shire, renamed Isle of Wight County in 1637, after the island off the south coast of England of the same name.

1854 - Isle of Wight county
Isle of Wight, a county in the S. E. part of Virginia, at the mouth of James river, which washes the N. E. border. It has an area of about 230 square miles. The Blackwater river forms the W. boundary. The surfaoe is nearly level ; the soil is generally thin and sandy. A portion of the land is occupied by swamps and pine forests. Indian corn is the staple product. Bacon of superior quality is exported. In 1850 there were raised 816,699 bushels of corn, and 89,713 of sweet potatoes. It contained 1 cotton factory, 1 saw mill, and 1 tannery; 19 churches, 149 pupils attending public schools, and 56 at tending academies or other schools. The Isle of Wight was one of the eight original shires into which Virginia was divided in 1634. Capital, Smithfield. Population, 9353, of whom 6968 were free, and 3395 slaves.

Isle of Wight, a southeastern county of Virginia, is adjacent to the mouth of James River. Area, about 300 square miles. It is bounded on the N.E. by James River, and on the W. by Blackwater River. Nearly half of the surface is covered with forests of pine and other trees. The soil is mostly sandy, and not very fertile. Indian corn and pork are the staples. This county is intersected by the Nor folk & Petersburg division of the Norfolk & Western Rail road. Capital, Isle of Wight Court-House. Pop. in 1870, 8320; in 1880, 10,572; in 1890, 11,313.
