Located in the western Tidewater region of Virginia, Hanover County was created on November 26, 1719, from the area of New Kent County called St. Paul's Parish. It was named for the Electorate of Hanover in Germany, because King George I of Great Britain was Elector of Hanover at the time. The county was developed by planters moving west from the Virginia tidewater, where soils had been exhausted by tobacco monoculture.

1854 - Hanover county
Hanover, a county in the E. part of Virginia, contains about 400 square miles. It is drained by the North Anna and South Anna rivers, which unite on the N. E. border of the county, and form the Pamunkey. The surface is hilly, and presents much diversity of soil. Wheat, maize, oats, and tobacco are the staples. In 1850 this county produced 377,610 bushels of Indian corn; 167,388 of wheat; 94,186 of oats; 404,550 pounds of tobacco; and 78,316 of butter. There were 24 flour and gristmills, 3 tanneries, and 2 manufactories of farming implements. It contained 27 churches ; 66 pupils attending public schools, and 352 attending academies or other schools. The dividing line between the primitive and tertiary formations passes through this county. It is intersected by the Central railroad, and by the Richmond and Potomac railroad. The streams afford extensive water-power. Organized in 1720. Capital, Hanover Court House. Population, 15,163, of whom 6760 were free, and 8393, slaves.

Han'over, a county in the E. central part of Virginia, has an area of about 450 square miles. It is bounded on the N.E. by the North Anna and Pamunkey Rivers, and on the S.W. by the Chickahominy River. It is intersectedly the South Anna River. The surface is hilly, and extensive; covered with forests. The soil is partly fertile. Wheat Indian corn, oats, and tobacco are the staple products. This county is intersected by the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad and the Chesapeake & Ohio Rail. road, the latter communicating with Hanover Court-House, the capital of the county. Pop. in 1870, 16,455; in 1880, 18,588; in 1890, 17,402.
