Hampstead, Rockingham, NH

Once part of Haverhill and Amesbury, Massachusetts settled in 1640, this town was formed as a result of the 1739 decision fixing the boundary line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It was originally known as "Timberlane Parish" because of the heavy growth of native trees. The town would be incorporated in 1749 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, who renamed it after Hampstead, England, the residence of William Pitt, a close friend.

Hampstead was the home of the first honey factory in the United States, in 1816.

Rockingham county, lies partly on the height of land between Merrimack and Piscataqua rivers. Most of the waters descend S.W. into the Merrimack through Spiggot river, which flows from Wash pond near the centre of the town. Angly pond is in the N.E. part of the town, the waters of which pass into the Powow river. Island pond, in the S.W. part of the town, contains a valuable farm of 300 acres. The town was granted by Gov. Benning Wentworth, January 19, 1749, and named by him after a pleasant village five miles N. of London, England. He reserved the island before mentioned for his own farm. Population, in 1830, 913.

Hampstead, a post-village of Rockingham co., N.H., in Hampstead township, 8 or 9 miles N.N.W., of Haverhill City, Mass. It has a church and a high school. Pop. the township, 935, Hampstead station is on the Nashua & Rochester Railroad, 16 miles N.E. of Nashua.
