About Brentwood
Brentwood, Rockingham, NH
The first non-native settlers came in 1652 to start a sawmill powered by a waterfall on the Exeter River.
The town was once a part of Exeter known as Brentwood (or Brintwood) Parish. It was named after Brentwood, Essex, originally called "Burnt Wood", where, in 1177, King Henry II granted permission for 40 acres (160,000 m2) of the king's forest to be cut, burned and cultivated.
Beginning in 1738, residents living in the southwestern portion of Exeter, now Brentwood and Fremont, petitioned to be set off, but were denied. They cited difficulty of getting to the Exeter church/ meetinghouse, where weekly attendance was obligatory, and the requirement to pay Exeter taxes... On 26 June 1742, Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth set Brentwood off from Exeter and incorporated it.

On 26 June 1742, Brentwood, New Hampshire was incorporated.
Brentwood was formerly a part of Exeter, and was disannexed from it and formed a separate town on the aforesaid date.

Rockingham county. Brentwood is bounded E. by Exeter, N. by Epping, W. by Poplin, and S. by Kingston. The soil is better adapted to grass than grain, although some improvements have been made in its qualities. Exeter river passes nearly through the centre of the town, and there are other streams of less magnitude connecting with it. Pick-pocket falls, on Exeter river, are in this town, and near them are situated an extensive cotton factory and a number of mills. A card factory has been established here, which promises to be of great utility; and also an iron furnace for casting machinery. Quantities of iron ore have been found, and it was formerly worked with success. Vitriol, combined in masses with sulphur, has also been found here. Brentwood was incorporated June 26, 1742.
