Gatineau: A major city located across the river from Ottawa, Gatineau is a cultural hub with museums, parks, and festivals.
Gatineau, Québec is located at the junction of the Gatineau River and OTTAWA RIVER, adjoining HULL. The city is located at the western end of Quebec, on the north shore of the Ottawa River opposite the federal capital and its name Gatineau comes from Nicolas Gastineau. According to legend, this 17th century traveler and fur trader drowned where the Gatineau River meets the Ottawa River. For a long time, the place of the drowning was referred to as Pointe-à-Gatineau, but part of the name was eventually cut off.
Although the city owes its birth to the forestry industry and agriculture, today Gatineau is an important center of economic and social development because Gatineau maintains privileged economic ties with the city of Ottawa.
Gatineau is nearly 200 km west of Montreal. New York State is only 100 km from the region. The city therefore offers all the advantages of the proximity of these two markets.

It was created through the merger of 7 municipalities situated east of the Gatineau River (Pointe-Gatineau, Touraine, East Templeton, West Templeton, village of Templeton and Gatineau), and is the largest French-speaking municipality of the National Capital Region and fifth-largest city in Québec. The mother tongue of the population is predominantly French and the population is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic. Gatineau is now the seat of the Hull Diocese, known as the Diocèse de Gatineau-Hull since its transfer there a few years ago. The city takes its name from Nicolas Gastineau, who was supposedly active in the fur trade of the area in the 17th century.

Starting in 2002, the cities of Gatineau, Hull, Buckingham, Aylmer and Masson-Angers were merged and the new urban agglomeration of Gatineau was created, which became the administrative center of the Outaouais region.
