History of Saint-Valérien, Québec, Canada

The lands of St. Valerian were cleared in the 1840s for the purpose of establishing farms.
Each grower had his own woodlot which provided another source of income. In addition, as in many rural villages in Quebec, seasonal forestry work was a common practice in Saint-Valérien during the first half of the 20th century.

1863 - Beginnings of a parish
In August 1863, the residents of row A Duquesne requested permission to build a chapel on row A Duquesne (row 6) claiming that they were too far from the church of Sainte-Cécile-du-Bic to attend mass on Sunday. Finally, the new parish is created. Father Jules Julien Amiot became its first parish priest and on October 29, 1886, the first mass was celebrated there.

The parish of Saint-Valérien was founded on June 19, 1885 by the separation of the 4th and 5th ranges of Sainte-Cécile-de-Bic. First called Saint-Tiburce, the parish then took the name of Saint-Valérien.
