Mont-Saint-Grégoire

Incorporated on December 21, 1994, this municipality is part of the regional county municipality of Haut-Richelieu in the administrative region of Montérégie. Mont-Saint-Grégoire was named for Pope Gregory the Great.

Mont Saint-Grégoire is located on the territory of the municipality. Rather, it is a hill whose summit reaches 251 meters. This mount or hill is largely covered by a sugar maple forest. The rest of the territory is occupied by flat land with apple orchards, crops of corn, soybeans and other cereals. The plain is dotted with agricultural silos of dairy farms.

  • Originally, the post office bore the name of Mount Johnson (1845-1923) and took that of Mont-Saint-Grégoire in 1923, following the modification of the name of the mountain itself.
    The old name celebrated the memory of Sir John Johnson (1741-1830), owner of the seigneury of Monnoir from 1795 and who lived at the foot of the mountain to which he gave his name between 1810 and the end of his life. He was born in Mount Johnson (1741-1830), near New York.

  • It was re-established in 1855 as the municipality of the parish of Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand,
    denomination borrowed from the parish erected canonically first in 1836 under the name of Saint-Raimond-de-Monnoir, then civilly in 1847 under that of Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand.
