Sennett was part of the Central New York Military Tract, land reserved for war veterans. In 1795, Daniel Sennett became the first settler. The town of Sennett was formed from the towns of Town of Brutus and Aurelius in 1827. Part of Sennett was used to contribute territory to the town of Throop in 1859.

SENNET, taken from Brutus, 19th March, 1807; from Albany 160, from Au burn, N. E. 5, miles; surface rolling; soil clay and gravelly loam, under high cultivation; lands valued at from 25 to 50 dollars the acre. Sennet, post village, on the road from Weedsport to Auburn, equally distant from each, contains 1 Baptist and 1 Presbyterian church, distillery, tannery, 1 tavern, 2 stores and about 30 dwellings, upon a fertile plain. The county poor house is on a farm in this town.
