Butler Township is a civil township in northeastern Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan.

Butler Township was organized in 1835. It was named after the town of Butler, New York, which was where most of the residents at that point had come from. There was a settlement here called Dayburg formed in 1845.

Butler Township contains two unincorporated communities: Butler and South Butler.

Faxton was a post office in the township from 1893 until 1900.

Butler Township was organized in 1835

In 1848, a half-acre site was conveyed to the First Baptist Church of Butler for a meeting house and burial ground.

On March 9, 1860, one-half acre of land located on the Northwest corner of Dayburg and Dean Road... was given to School District #4.
This resulted in the building of the Dayburg School.

Butler, a post-township of Branch co, Mich, about 30 miles S.W. of Jackson, and 6 miles N.E. of Coldwater. It has 2 lumber-mills and a flour-mill. Pop. 1389.
