Berwick, Maine, USA - The Falls - Somersworth, N.H. & Berwick, Me.

Berwick is a town in York County, Maine, United States, situated in the southern part of the state beside the Salmon Falls River.

South Berwick was set off from Berwick in 1814, North Berwick in 1831.

Originally part of Kittery, the area later comprised by Berwick was settled about 1631 and called Kittery Commons or Kittery North Parish. It was later called Unity after the ship that transported Scots prisoners of war from the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 to the colonies...

The raid by Indians in 1675 was the first of several during what was known as King Philip's War. In 1690–1691 during King William's War, the village was burned and abandoned in the Raid on Salmon Falls. It was resettled in 1703 and called Newichawannock, its old Abenaki name. In 1713, it was incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court as Berwick, after Berwick-upon-Tweed, England...

Berwick, Maine
York county. This town lies on the E. side of Salmon river, about 14 miles S.S.W. from Alfred, 45 S.W. from Portland, and 98 S.W. from Augusta. Berwick has considerable trade in lumber. Incorporated, 1713. Population, 1837, 1,799.

1886 - Berwick
Berwick, in York County, first known as a part of Newichawannock, was incorporated in 1713, being the ninth town in the State. The territory then included also the present North Berwick and. South Berwick. Settlements appear to have been made here as early as 1624. The titles are derived from Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Rowles, sagamore of the Newichawannock tribe of Indians. In 1643 Humphrey Chadbourne purchased of the sagamore a part of the land on which the village of South Berwick now stands. Spencer and Broughton also purchased land of Rowles the same year. Among the names of residents about this time are the well-known Frost, Shapleigh, Heard, Plaisted, Spencer, Broughton, Leader and Wincoln. The Boston and Maine railroad passes across the southern part of the town, and the Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway railroad connects at Great Falls with the former road. Berwick, a post-village of York co., Me., in Berwick township, on Salmon Falls River, 1/ 4 mile from Great Falls Railroad Station, and about 44 miles S.W. of Portland. It has a church and several steam mills. The township is bounded on the W. by Salmon Falls River, and is about 5 miles N.E. of Dover, N.H. It has manufactures of carriages, lumber, furniture, shoes, sash, blinds, &c., Pop. 2291.
