1839 - Hardwick
Hardwick, Vermont
Caledonia county. Hardwick is finely watered by Lamoille river, which gives the town valuable mill sites, and which are well improved for manufacturing purposes. The soil of the town is generally very good, and produces a variety of exports. Between six and seven thousand sheep, and many other cattle, are kept in the town, a large amount of which are annually fattened and sent to market.

Among the first settlers of the town, in 1790, was Mr. Gideon Sabin, whose wife became the mother of 26 children. Population, 1830, 1,216. Hardwick lies 20 miles N.N.E. from Montpelier and 13 N.W. from Danville.

There are in this town three small villages. The oldest, called the Street, or Hazen's Road, is situated on high land near the north line of the town: the second, called Stevensville, is on the River Lamoille, in the eastern part : and the third and largest, called Lamoilleville, on the same river in the south-west part of the town. Each of these villages contains a number of mechanics' shops, stores, &c., and the two latter possess excellent water privileges, on which mills and other machinery are erected.

There is a mineral spring in the south part of the town, which is a place of considerable resort, and is found to be very efficacious, particularly in cutaneous affections.

Hardwick, a post-village in Hardwick township, Caledonia co., Vt., on the Lamoille River, and on the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad, 17 miles E.S.E. of Hyde Park, and about 22 miles N.N.E. of Montpelier. It has 4 churches, an academy, a newspaper office, and manufactures of lumber and marble. The township contains also East Hardwick, and has granite-quarries. Pop. of the township, 1547.

Hardwick, a banking post-village in Hardwick town ship (town), Caledonia co., Vt., on the Lamoille River and on the St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain R., 22 miles NNE. of Montpelier. The town contains large granite-quarries. Pop. of the town in 1900, 2466 : of the village, 1334.
