History of Wheelock, Vermont, USA

Wheelock was chartered on November 8, 1780 by the Vermont Legislature.
The charter was issued to John Wheelock and the trustees of Dartmouth College and Moor's Charity School. Wheelock is thus the only town in Vermont ever to have been chartered to an organization wholly outside of the state.

Wheelock, Vermont
Caledonia county. There is some good land in this town, but a great part of it is mountainous or hilly, and fit only for the pasturage of sheep, of which about 3,000 are kept. The streams flow N.W. into the Lamoille, and S.E. into the Passumpsic.

This town was granted in 1785, to the charity school at Dartmouth College, and named in honor of John Wheelock, who was, at that time, president of that institution. Wheelock lies 30 miles N.N.E. from Montpelier and 9 N. from Danville. Population, 1830, 834.

This town was granted, in 1785, to the Charity School at Dartmouth College, and named in honor of John Wheelock, who was, at that time president of that institution.

The first settlers were Joseph Page, Abraham Morrill, and Dudley Swasey, in 1790.

Boundaries. North by Sheffield, east by Lyndon, south by Danville, and west by Greensborough.

Productions ofUie Soil. Wheat, 1,967 bushels; Indian corn, 1,100 bushels j potatoes, 57,520 bushels; hay, 3,334 tons ; maple sugar, 32,160 pounds ; wool, 8,287 pounds.

Distances. Forty-four miles northeast from Montpeiier, ten miles north from Danville, and ten miles northwest from St. Johnsbury.

Wheelock lies five miles from Lyndon, through which a railroad passes.

1896 - Caledonia Spring House Murder
The Caledonia Spring House hotel was the site of a notorious murder on May 20, 1896, when owner Marshall Way killed his 44-year-old wife, Ellen Sheldon Way, in the dooryard. According to the St. Johnsbury Caledonian of May 22, 1896, "The little town of Wheelock was thrown into a state of wild excitement last Wednesday evening when the cry went around that Marshall Way had killed his wife. It was a terrible shock to the people of the quiet town, and it may be many days before they recover sufficiently to converse to any length upon another subject."
