1907 - TRAGIC DEATH AT METCALFE
Coroner Baptie has been notified of a tragic death at Metcalfe, Ontario, of Mrs. James McCooey. She had been in ill health for some tie and when her husband, who was away from the house for an hour or so yesterday, returned, he found her lifeless body suspended from a rafter in the barn. Dr. Wallace, of Metcalfe, was notified and at once sent word to the coroner. Mrs. McCooey leaves a husband, three sons and one daughter. Dr. Baptie consulted the county crown attorney about the matter, and although this afternoon he could not say definitely, it is unlikely that he will have to go out there. Apparently it is a case of where the woman was despondent through ill health, and when possibly not quite it her right mind, committed suicide. Her daughter had gone upstairs to rest and her husband had gone to a neighbor's.

1910 - SCAFFOLDING FELL, THREE WERE HURT
Serious Accident Occurred at Metcalfe on Saturday Afternoon.

Special to The Journal.
Metcalfe, Ont., Oct. 17. - A serious accident occurred here Saturday afternoon, when a scaffolding on the roof of James Simpson's house gave way. James Grant, Stephen Henderson and Robert Speers fell 25 feet and were seriously injured. Mr. Henderson is believed to be fatally injured. He fell on his shoulder and head. His shoulder was frightfully bruised and he received a deep gash in the head. The other men were not so seriously hurt. It is stated that Grant and Speers will be around again within a week or more. The doctor states that Henderson is in a serious condition, and may not recover.

The cause of the accident is unknown. It appears that the staging was in good condition, and that the men overloaded it with shingles. At any rate the fall was a clear one, there not being a single thing to break the fall.

The whole town was alarmed when the news spread. People flocked from all sections. ... Read MORE...
