Founded in 1852 and incorporated on July 1, 1855, the municipality of Saint-Marcel-de-Richelieu covers an area of more than 51 square kilometers in the administrative region of Montérégie, part of the regional county municipality of Les Maskoutains.
North of Saint-Hugues, in the northern end of the MRC des Maskoutains, takes place this municipality, about thirty kilometers away from Saint-Hyacinthe, further south. Bounded by the Yamaska River to the west, the territory is traversed by a few streams: streams from Descente Jérôme Bonin, Descente Saint-Marcel, and Bas du Rang.
