The settlement of these places began in 1651, when a few French and Hurons settled on the south shore of the St. Lawrence.
However, the banks being rocky there, the settlers settled further inland, where the land was fertile and relatively easy to clear.

The first administrative division of these places dates from 1729,
with the constitution of the seigneury of Beauharnois, granted by the King of France Louis-XIV to the governor of New France Charles de Beauharnois de La Boische and to his brother Claude de Beauharnois de Beaumont and de Villechauve (they are both natural sons of Louis XIV). However, the land will be deserted until 1821, when the first settlers settle there. This is James Duncan, who built a sawmill there, without the consent of the owner of the Seigneurie. A real epic war ensues between Mr. Duncan and Édouard Ellice, owner of the territory. Despite numerous prohibitions from the lord, Mr. Duncan nevertheless continued to operate his sawmill.

History
In 1651, a few French and Huron landed on the south bank. Due to the rocky terrain, the colonists settled further inland where the land was fertile and easier to clear. In the years that followed, the colonists decided to create their own parish. They founded the parish of Saint-Jean-Chrysostome in 1828, choosing a name that had the same initial letters as the seigneur de Lauzon, Sir John Caldwell. By 1830, 1200 people had settled at Saint-Jean-Chrysostome. In 1855, the parish became the municipality of Saint-Jean-Chrysostome and in 1965, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome became a city.
