The municipality of Saint-Esprit, located in the regional county municipality of Montcalm in the administrative region of Lanaudière. Founded in 1808 and incorporated on July 1, 1955, this locality has a population of approximately 2,000 Spiritois and Spritois and covers an area of 54 square kilometers.

This municipality is in the Lanaudière region, 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Laurentides and 8 kilometers south of Sainte-Julienne.

Formerly, the territory was identified as the Ruisseau-Saint-Esprit concession. The place, erected on the banks of the Saint-Esprit River, of which it occupies both banks, could have taken its name from this river, just like the post office opened in 1852.

Today the municipality of Saint-Esprit has several agritourism farms on its territory, including Ferme Chant-O-Vent, garlic producers; Poultry from Angèle, producers of poultry and game birds; Bulzail, garlic producers; Triple G Farm; The Vegetable Shop, producers of organic baskets; Honey flower, honey house.

The area's first settlers arrived at the end of 18th century and were mostly from L'Ange-Gardien, Beauport, and Saint-Sulpice. Originally, the area was identified as the Rivière-Saint-Esprit or Grand-Saint-Esprit Concession. In 1808, the Parish of Saint-Ours-du-Saint-Esprit was founded, however after 1838, the parish name was shortened to just Saint-Esprit to avoid confusion with another parish called Saint-Ours in the Diocese of Montreal.
  • 1832 - The Parish of St. Esprit (L'Assomption seigniory)
is in the rear of the fief. The first settlement is on the N. branch of the R. St. Esprit and encroaches on the patented lands in the neighbouring township; it is about one league N. of the church, with which it communicates by an excellent road. The second settlement is on the N.W. branch of the same river and also encroaches upon the T. of Rawdon, particularly on the crown reserve., No. 2 in the 1st range: the settlers are Canadians who have possessed this tract for many years.
