About Astoria
The Pacific Fur Company, a subsidiary of John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company, was created to begin fur trading in the Oregon Country. During the War of 1812, in 1813, the company's officers sold its assets to their Canadian rivals, the North West Company. The fur trade would remain under British control until U.S. pioneers following the Oregon Trail began filtering into the town in the mid-1840s. The Treaty of 1818 established joint U.S. – British occupancy of the Oregon Country.
As the Oregon Territory grew and became increasingly more colonized by Americans, Astoria likewise grew as a port city near the mouth of the great river that provided the easiest access to the interior. The first U.S. post office west of the Rocky Mountains was established in Astoria in 1847 and official state incorporation in 1876.

1811 - Astoria, Oregon founded
Grew from Fort Astoria, founded by the Pacific Fur Company in 1811.
1813 - October 23 - The Pacific Fur Company trading post in Astoria, Oregon, (named for John Jacob Astor) is sold to their rival, British North West Company, during the War of 1812.
The fur trade in the Pacific Northwest is dominated for the next three decades by the United Kingdom until the beaver population dwindles.
1895 - Astoria
Astoria, a city of Oregon, a port of entry, and the capital of Clatsop co., is situated on the S. bank of the Columbia River, about 6 miles from the ocean, 70 miles by land and about 100 miles by river N.W. of Portland. It has 9 churches, 4 banks (2 national), a hospital (conducted by the Sisters of Charity), with a government seaman's ward, and offices which issue 2 daily and 4 weekly news papers. Its industry consists largely of the canning of salmon, of which about 450,000 cases are shipped annually. Pop. in 1890, 6184.
