The municipality of Rigaud was established in 1995 following the merger between the city of Rigaud and the parish of Sainte-Madeleine-de-Rigaud, in the administrative region of Montérégie and in the regional municipality of Vaudreuil-Soulanges. The current municipality occupies an area of more than 97 square kilometers.

Rigaud nestles at the foot of the mountain, bordering Lac des Deux-Montagnes and the Ottawa River. It is a municipality recognized for its recreational tourism vocation. Indeed, all economic and social activities are based on natural resources.

The town was named for Pierre François de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil-Cavagnal, the last governor of New France.

1732 - Seigniory (Rigaud) Granted, Oct. 29 1732, to Sieurs de Cavagnal and Rigaud
On October 29, 1732 that the seigneury of Rigaud was granted to Pierre de Rigaud de Cavagnal, naval officer, and to Captain Pierre-François de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, his brother. The latter, born in 1698, was the last French Governor General of Canada and, as such, he signed the capitulation of New France.

In 1763, the seigniory was sold to Michel-Alain Chartier, Marquis de Lotbinière.
But its development only really began in the middle of the 19th century, after the opening of a post office under the name of Rigaud in 1832, and the opening of the Bourget college by the Clercs de Saint-Viateur.

seigniory, in the co. of Vaudreuil, is bounded E. by the S. of Vaudreuil; W. by the province line; in the rear by the T. of Newton; in front by the Ottawa and the Lake of Two Mountains. - 3 leagues in front by 3 in depth. Granted, Oct. 29 1732, to Sieurs de Cavagnal and Rigaud: the present proprietor is W. Bingham, Esq. - A very fertile soil runs through the whole of this grant, and where cultivated is found well adapted to grain and pulse of all sorts. Two thirds of the S. are settled, and the remainder is in standing wood. There are 9 concessions, containing 266 farms; 5 concessions are in the upper end of the S., 3 in the lower end, and one in the intervening space: there are also 35 emplacemens. The farms are 3 and 4 arpents by 16 and 20. The unconceded lands are not surveyed and have no roads across them. This S. is watered by the rivers a la Graisse and Raquette; the former is at all times navigable from the Ottawa up to the fall, which greatly contributes to the advantage of... Read MORE...

RIGAUD, a flourishing post village and seigniory of Quebec, co. of Vaudreuil, on the Riviere a la Graisse, 45 miles W.S. W. of Montreal, 16 miles from Vandreuil. It is the seat of Rigand College and Ste. Anne's Convent, and contains a telegraph otfice,6 stores, a saw mill and a grist mill. Pop. 250.

On January 1, 1881, the municipality of the village of Rigaud separated from the parish of Sainte-Madeleine-de-Rigaud. In 1911, the village became the city of Rigaud.

Rigaud, a post-village of Vaudreuil co., Quebec, on the Riviere a la Graisse, 45 miles WSW. of Montreal, on the Canadian Pacific R. It has a foundry, sash and other mills, cheese-factory, etc. Pop. in 1901, 779.

In 1909, the explosives factory of the Northern Explosive company, owned by Curtis & Harvey, was opened in Rigaud,
which led to an increase in the population, but this decreased in 1911, following an explosion of the factory which kills 4. Another explosion occurred in a blowing snow in Rigaud on August 18, 1917.
