Maniwaki: Situated in the Outaouais region, Maniwaki serves as a gateway to northern wilderness adventures and Indigenous cultural experiences.
In 1851, the Oblats founded the L'Assomption-de-Maniwaki parish. Forestry took root and became the livelihood of many settlers in the region. Irish, French and Algonquins, the three traditional cultures of the Gatineau Valley, contributed to the development of the town and lived side by side in harmony. Maniwaki was officially founded in 1851 and became a township municipality in 1904. It obtained the status of "village" in 1930, and status of "Ville" in 1957. wikipedia
The first inhabitants of the area were Algonquin Native Americans. To this day, south of Maniwaki, we find the Amerindian reserve of the Rivière Désert, in Algonquin, the Kitigan Zibi Reserve.
In the Algonquin language, the term Maniwaki means "Land of Mary".
