ABOUT THE PLACE

About Messines

Messines, Québec, Canada - Messines, Québec, Canada - Main Street
The municipality of Messines covers an area of more than 108 square kilometers in the Outaouais administrative region. It is part of the regional county municipality of La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau.

The municipality was born around 1840 under the name of Burbridge and took off thanks to agriculture and the exploitation of the forests that cover its territory. It was the advent of the Hull–Maniwaki railway that determined the development of the community and its prosperity in the second half of the 19th century.

Messines gradually turned towards tourism and vacationing. The municipality is recognized today as a favorite place for hunting, fishing, and various four-season tourist activities.

The Forêt de l'Aigle, which is near Messines, is home to a large population of big game. Moose hunting is very popular there, as well as white-tailed deer hunting. Bear hunting arouses passions among American and European amateurs.
