Florence is an unincorporated community in the town of Pittsford.


On October 12, 1761, The New Hampshire Royal Governor, Bennington Wentworth, granted a charter to a new town in New Hampshire Grants to be known as Pitts’ Ford which later changed to Pittsford. The name came from a ford on Otter Creek and named after William Pitt, prime minister of England at the time. That same year, 25,000 acres were granted to 63 proprietors. Half brothers, Gideon and Benjamin Cooley, settled here in 1767 as farmers. pittsfordvermont.com

Pittsford, Vermont
Rutland county. Otter creek meanders through this very pleasant and flourishing town, nearly in its centre, and fertilizes a large part of its territory. Furness river affords the town good mill privileges, on which are large iron works and other manufactories. Iron ore of a very fine quality, and elastic marble, are abundant; also, the oxide of manganese. The agricultural productions are valuable. In 1837 there were in the town 12,368 sheep. A female child was born here in 1784, who died at the age of 9 years, and weighed 200 pounds. Pittsford was first settled about the year 1770.—It was a frontier town for a number of years. The remains of Fort Vergence are still visible. This town lies 44 miles S.W. from Montpelier and 8 N. from Rutland.—Population, 1830, 2,005.

Rutland Co. Otter Creek, which flows through the middle of Pittsford, from south to north, with a gentle meandering current is the principal
stream, and its width here is from forty to fifty yards. Furnace Brook, a considerable tributary of Otter Creek, is formed by the union of East Creek and Philadelphia River. Along these streams are extensive meadows of the rich alluvial soil. On Furnace Brook and its branches are numerous mill privileges, which are well improved.

There are two ponds in the town: one in the south-eastern part, covering about twenty acres ; and the other in the north-eastern, covering about thirty acres. There are no mountains.

The soil is generally loam, with some tracts which are sandy, and some of clay. The timber is oak, of several kinds.

Pittsford abounds in iron ore, which makes the best of ware and bar iron, and has inexhaustible quarries of excellent marble. The iron ore yields about twenty-five per cent, of metallic iron. The marble is coarse...

Pittsford, a post-village and summer resort in Pittsford township, Rutland co., Vt., on Otter Creek, and on the Central Vermont Railroad, 10 miles N.N.W. of Rutland, and 7 miles S. of Brandon. It has 4 churches, a high school, manufactures of paper, marble, iron, &c., and a summer hotel. Pop. of the township, 2127.
