History of Roxton Falls, Québec, Canada

The municipality was created in 1792 when the government of Lower Canada divided the land east of the Richelieu River and south of the St. Lawrence into townships.

In early January 1803, the first grants for lots in Roxton Township were granted, but the area remained sparsely populated for several decades.

1832 - ROXTON,
township, in the co. of Shefford, lies between Milton and Ely and is bounded in the rear by Acton and in front by Shefford. - The southern moiety has been surveyed and granted. The land is good and if cultivated would prove fertile. The low land is rather wet, but not unfit for tillage, as it produces some of the best species of hard, black wood. Branches of the Yamaska and several other streams water this town-ship, which contains only a very few settlers. - Ungranted and unlocated, 12,000 acres.

In the early 1840s, the village of Metcalfe was founded there, named in honor of the Governor-General of Lower Canada. In 1860, the village had 600 inhabitants.

1849 - Roxton Falls
In the middle of the 19th century, in 1849, precisely, the missionary Jacques-Edmond LeBlond left this testimony on the region of Roxton Falls (on Route 139), on the foothills of the Appalachians, in a letter to the Bishop of Montreal: “Men, women and children run, bustle and work where the wild beasts alone had made their stay. The noise of the clearing ax, the cracking of the trees which succumb, the crackling of the fire which cleans the forest, have replaced the silence of the woods. A good road, made at great expense by the Company, renders access to these places easy and convenient. It is already dotted with small cleared spaces. At the end rises the new village or "future town" of Roxton Falls, which the company had named Metcalfe, but which the inhabitants, with the agreement of the latter, prefer to call by the glorious Canadian name of Iberville. In 1863, the Municipality of the Village of Roxton Falls was created by detachment from the Township of Roxton. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church was then erected there.

1867 - Roxton Falls
"Roxton Falls - A good sized village situated on the east bank of Black River, in Roxton Township, Shefford County. It is six miles from Acton ; eleven miles from Roxton Pond ; and fifteen miles from Waterloo. There is a fine water power here, and a great deal of lumber is annually manufac tured by mills in the place and vicinity. There are also two large tanneries in the village, which do an extensive business. Daily mails and stages. There is only one church, Roman Catholic, the Protestant community using the school house- for its place of worship. Population 300. Inhabitants principally French Canadians."

ROXTON FALLS, an incorporated village in Shefford co.. Que.. on Black River, and on the C. P. R., 20 mile's from Waterloo. It is the centre of an extensive lumbering business, and contains 1 church, 4 hotels, 1 cheese factory, 1 bank agency, 1 telegraph office, several stores and mills, and the largest sole leather tanneries in the Dominion.
