ABOUT THE PLACE
About Tilbury
Tilbury is located 56 km east of WINDSOR. It was a town from 1910 to 1998, when it was amalgamated with the new municipality of CHATHAM-KENT.
The community began as a railway stop in 1872 on the Canada Southern Railway line between Fort Erie and Windsor. By 1887 the community had grown sufficiently to be incorporated as the village of Tilbury Centre. The name was chosen because the village was located between Tilbury East, Tilbury West and Tilbury North townships, and refers to the town of the same name on the Thames River near London, England. This area of Ontario was heavily forested, and many of the first businesses in Tilbury were based on these lumber supplies.

1802 - Church of St. Peter established in Tilbury East
1855 - Church of St. Francis Xavier established in Tilbury
1872 - Tilbury - First settled in 1872 when the Canada Southern Railway was built, a post office and general store opened and the tiny settlement became known as Henderson.

TILBURY EAST, a post village in Kent co., Ont., 20 miles from Chatham. It contains a steam flouring mill and several stores. Pop. 150.
The "Tilbury Times" newspaper was founded in 1884
In 1887 the community became the village of Tilbury Centre.
In 1890 the Canadian Pacific Railway located a station in Tilbury on its new branch from Woodstock to the Detroit River, which increased shipping facilities.

Tilbury, a banking post-village and outport of Kent co., Ontario, on the Canadian Pacific and the Michigan Central Rs., 32 miles E. by S. of Windsor. Pop. in 1901, 1012.
