1854 - ALARMING ACCIDENT AT HOBOKEN. FALL OF THE BARCLAY STREET FERRY BRIDGE. ONE HUNDRED PERSONS THROWN INTO THE WATER - SEVERAL SUPPOSED DROWNED - MIRACULOUS ESCAPE OF HUNDREDS ON THE BRIDGE.
An accident of the most painful and alarming nature occurred between 5 and 6 o'clock last evening, at the Hoboken Ferry on the Jersey shore, by which the lives of some five hundred persons, men, women and children, were placed in peril. The ferry bridge, erected for the landing of passengers to and from Barclay street, New York, fell with a loud crash, while upward of 500 persons were standing on it, awaiting the arrival of the next steamboat. A wild cry of alarm arose, and at one time it was supposed that more than half of those on the bridge had met with watery graves. The shrieks and cries for help were heard in every direction from those struggling in the water and clinging to the bridge. The scene was truly appalling. When the news of the catastrophe reached out City it spread with great rapidity, and thousands flocked to the opposite shore in search of their friends. All sorts of exaggerated accounts were afloat, which led the people to believe there was a large number of lives... Read MORE...

1873 - TORNADO IN JERSEY.
A few minutes after the heavy rain-storm had commenced in Hoboken, about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the immense frame-work, over 400 feet in length, in course of construction on the pier of the New Hamburg Steam-ship line, in Hoboken, was struck by a tornado and entirely demolished. Over fifty men at work on the building had barely gained shelter in a building at the upper end of the pier when the crash came, or otherwise a number of lives would have been lost. The superintendent estimates the loss at $2,000. In West Hoboken Clinton Hall, a new building in course of construction, was struck by a gale of wind and completely destroyed, being leveled to the ground. Three workmen were buried in the ruins, and one was fatally injured.
The structure, which was being erected by Doric Lodge F. and A. M., of frame-work, 25 feet front, 90 feet deep, and 3 stories high, was damaged to about $4,000. The roof of a new building on Clinton avenue, Jersey City Heights, was carried bodily a block ... Read MORE...

TWO FERRY BOATS RUINED AND MUCH WHARF PROPERTY DAMAGED BY FIERCE FLAMES - THE LOSS WILL BE OVER $500,000.

New York, Aug. 8. - Inside of three-quarters of an hour fire swept away the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company's terminal in Hoboken, seized two ferry boats and practically ruined them, and for half an hour threatened the destruction of the entire water front in the vicinity, including the Hamburg-American and North German Lloyd steamship docks, at which several big ships were lying. But, so far as known, no lives were lost.

For over an hour huge tongues of flame leaped from the wooden structures on the Lackawanna docks, lighting the New Jersey and New York water fronts. For a time it threatened a loss greater than that of the big dock fire of several years ago when the North German Lloyd piers were destroyed with a great loss of life.

Blazing ferry boats, cut from their docks, floated in the river, wandering fire ships, which for a time endangered shipping ... Read MORE...

With twelve lives as the toll of the tragedy, an investigation was begun yesterday to learn the cause of the fire which swept the Hotel Colonial, 39-41 Newark Street, Hoboken, early yesterday. A second inquiry, to be conducted by Prosecuter of the Pleas PIERRE P. GARVEN of Jersey City will determine the manner in which the hotel was conducted.

The bodies of four victims were identified at Bosworth's Morgue, where hundreds, unable to recognize charred remains, sought to identify the dead through some garment or trinket gathered up by police and firemen. Throughout the day an anxious throng stood about the morgue.

Another group stood in front of the four-story structure in Newark Street, its front, excepting for a few broken windows, giving no hint of the destruction within.
