1894 - Massena
The Town of Massena - Organized in 1802.

MASSENA, the fourth town organized, lies in the extreme northeast part of the county, and received its name in honor of Marshal Massena of the army of the first Napoleon. The town was incorporated in the same act that formed the county, March 3, 1802, and included in its area the original townships of Louisville, Stockholm and the whole of Great Tract No. 2. By the formation of Hopkinton, Brasher, Lawrence and other towns on the southwest, Massena was reduced to its present area, 30,671 acres. A large portion of this tract was not a part of the Macomb purchase. The St. Lawrence River forms the northern boundary of the town, and the Long Saut and Barnhart's Islands are a part of the town. The surface of the town is nearly level; the soil a fertile loam, mixed in parts with sand and clay. Massena, a post-village in Massena township, St. Lawrence co., N.Y., on Grass River, about 38 miles E.N.E. of Ogdensburg. . It has a bridge across the river, which here affords extensive water-power. It contains several churches, 2 flour-mills, and a union school. Pop. 483. The township is bounded on the N.W. by the St. Lawrence River, and intersected by the Grass and Racket Rivers. It contains Massena Centre and Massena Springs. Pop. of the town ship, 2709.

Massena, a banking poet-village in Massena township (town), St. Lawrence co., N.Y., on the Grass River, about 38 miles ENE. of Ogdensburg. The river affords extensive water-power. It has paper-, pulp- and saw-mills. The town is bounded on the NW. by the St. Lawrence River and in tersected by the Grass and Raquette rivers. Pop. in 1900, 3904 ; of the village, 2032.

1943 - EIGHT PERSONS PERISH IN BLAST AT MASSENA, N.Y. WAR WORKERS TRAPPED AS THEY STOP FOR MEAL ON WAY TO ALUMINUM PLANT.
Massena, N. Y., Jan. 5 (AP) - Eight persons, seven of them night shift war workers, perished in an explosion and fire which destroyed a small restaurant and filling station on the outskirts of this northern New York town today.

Five of the victims were passengers of a bus which had stopped briefly to permit passengers to eat. The bus driver and two occupants of an automobile which had stopped for gasoline also died.

Four persons were injured, one seriously. No estimate of damage was available.

State police questioned WALTER HUTCHINS, the station owner, and other witnesses on details of the explosion, believed caused by a can of gasoline which ignited within the restaurant. The blast blew out the small building's front wall and enveloped the station in flames. The war workers were en route to their jobs in the Blancor aluminum plant three miles north of here.
