Before, this area was known as Oak Creek. The town started around 1883, and became a stage coach stop in 1884. Is named for Pierre Bottineau 1814-1895, a Metis pioneer man.

Bottineau, a post-town, the capital of Bottineau co., N.D., 99 miles by rail N.W. of Devil's Lake. It has 2 churches, a bank, a flouring-mill, a high school, and 2 newspaper offices. It is near the Turtle Mountains, and in its vicinity are numerous lakes and streams. Pop. about 250.
