1854 - Kaukauna
Kaukauna, formerly Grand Kaukaulin, a thriving post-village of Outagamie county, Wisconsin, on the Neenah or Fox river, 100 miles N. N. W. from Milwaukee. The rapids in the river here afford abundant water-power, which is employed in sawing pine lumber, &c. It contains 2 churches and 3 stores. Population, about 200.

1895 - Kaukauna
Kaukauna, kaw-kaw'na, an incorporated city of Outagamie co., Wis., on Fox River, by which it is divided into two sections (known as Kaukauna and South Kaukauna), and on the Chicago & Northwestern and Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railroads, 7 miles N.E. of Appleton. The city has 8 churches, a high, 2 graded, and 3 parochial schools, 5 paper-mills, 8 pulp-mills, 2 flour-mills, a sash-, door-, and blind-factory, 2 machine-shops, an electric-light plant, several stone-quarries, and railroad repair-shops, round-house, &c. Pop. in 1880, 834; in 1890, 4667.

1904 - FIREMEN'S BITTER FIGHT. Kaukauna Has Blaze Sunday Morning
(Special to the Northwestern.)

Kaukauna, Wis., Jan. 25. - With the thermometer 26 degrees below zero and with face and hands frozen, brave Kaukauna firemen battled with a stubborn fire Sunday morning. The blaze started at 2:20 o'clock in the basement paint shop of Pauli's wagon works at the foot of Wisconsin avenue. Adjoining was the blacksmith shop of ex-Alderman Knitter and adjoining this building next stood his home all of the [sic] wooden structures. The fire alarm failed to arouse seven of the twelve men of the fire department so that only five firemen had to fight for about three long hours without any relief in the bitter cold and cutting wind. Fire Chief Henry Schubert in coupling a hose, which he had to with bare hands severely froze the fingers of his left hand also the side of his face and chin. 1911 - Kaukauna
TOWN of Kaukauna. - The first white occupant of the territory, now Outagamie county, was Dominique Ducharme, who about 1790 or 1798 established himself on the bank of the Fox river, at what is now Kaukauna. Ducharme, though said to have begun clearing and making a farm, had Indian trading for his main purpose, and his settlement was not permanent. He secured Indian title to a large body of land, fronting on the river, extending back nearly three miles northwest. Several years later, probably 1817, Augustin Grignon, purchased of the Indians a similar tract in this locality, a part of which was of the land sold by them to Ducharme. This claim was patented to Grignon who occupied it permanently and engaged in the Indian trade there and at other points until his death. His son, Charles A., continued the business until the removal of the Indians and with his brothers, Paul and Alexander, took a prominent part in the town of Kaukaulan, which at that time. included all of the inhabited...
