Beaumont was founded as a town in 1835 by Northerners. The early European-American settlement had an economy based on the development of lumber, farming, and port industries. In 1892, Joseph Eloi Broussard opened the first commercially successful rice mill in the state, stimulating development of rice farming in the area.

Beaumont, a post-village, capital of Jefferson county, Texas, on the Neches river, about 30 miles from its mouth, and 800 miles K. from Austin City. Small vessels ply regularly between Galveston and this place. The county consists of a level plain, which is sparsely inhabited. The chief business of the people is the raising of cattle and horses, immense herds of which range over the vast prairies, and feed on the natural grasses.

1894 - TERRIFIC WIND STORM. Roundhouse Wrecked, Cars Turned Over and Damaged to Other Property.
Beaumont Jefferson Co., Tex., Feb. 8. - A severe storm visited this place about 5 o'clock this morning. The wind attained terrific velocity, but of short duration. The Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City roundhouse was wrecked. Damage between $900 and $1,000. Two cottages in course of erection in the Calder addition were demolished, besides numerous shanties, trees and fences were blown down. Two box cars in the Southern Pacific yards were turned over in the ditch and three flats near by were blown from the rails. The speed of the wind is not known, but it is thought most of the damage was done within the space of about two or three minutes.
