Pentwater, Oceana, MI
Edwin R. Cobb and Andrew Rector bought the first government land here in 1849 and built their sawmill in 1853; Charles Mears came in 1856, built a sawmill and a boarding house and called his part of the village Middlesex; Mr. Cobb became the first postmaster of Pent Water on March 17, 1855, and the first supervisor when the township was organized in 1856; it was platted in 1862 and incorporated as the village of Pent Water in 1867; the spelling was changed to Pentwater on May 23, 1894...

Pent'water, a post-village in Pentwater township, Oceana co., Mich., on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of a river of its own name, and at the northern terminus of the Chicago & Michigan Lake Shore Railroad, 44 miles N.N.W. of Muskegon, and about 15 miles S. of Ludington. It contains 3 churches, a state bank, 1 or 2 newspaper offices, a graded school, several lumber-mills, a foundry, a planing mill, &c., and has an active trade in lumber, fish, and other products. Pop. 1294; of the township, 1370.
